That would NOT be in East or West Prussia, but in Pommern.
Inter alia, I have been looking through the LDS films for Koscierzyna,
deaths from the end of the C18, and there were a good few Hilbrants as
I recall. Berent/Koscierzyna is not far from the old Pomeranian
frontier.

My great-grandfather, THEODOR HARTMANN (born 1857) was in the achte bezirk brigad aus 'Huelfe bei Konitz" in 1877. Does anyone have information regarding 'Huelfe'.. is/was this a village, an estate, or what? A map from the library of congress places this in 1871 on the southwest tip of a lake just north of Pollnitz, between Schlochau and Konitz? The library could find nothing there today.

When he was born in 1857 he was due to conscription in 1877, but from the evidence you provided, he was probably not called up for the 2 1/2 year active service but placed directly into the Landwehr <most likely for poor health>.
The Landwehr district. (which in general covers a county) was the Bezirk <district> of Conitz
This district formed part of the 8. Royal Prussian Infantery Brigade at THORN
So the official title would have been: 8.<th> Infanterie Brigade, Bezirks Commando <District Command> Konitz

The county Konitz in 1900 (new spelling):
belonged to the Regierungsbezirk (Sub-province) Marienwerder-Westpreussen.

The population figures for the County (including Conitz for 1895 (10547 Protestants, 40974 Catjolics, 953 Jewish)
In 1919 all of county Konitz became Polish (pol.name: Chojnice)

need european letters, the name is H�lfe, than you can find it. It is near
by Konitz.

for Gnewino on film at the LDS - they take a couple of months to
arrive in the UK. It is at least written in a latin hand which makes
matters simpler.
