In the Family History Library catalogue under the topic Church
Records for Hildesheim are listings I do not fully understand. One
entry in the list is Kirchenbuch 1644-1852 Katholiche Kirche Dom
Hildesheim and further down is a listing for Kirchenbuchduplikat
1813-1874 Katholiche Kirche Dom Hildesheim. Since I am searching the
years 1820-1850 both books would appear to have what I am looking
for. If I do not know the religion of the person I am searching for,
would it be better to use civil records of that time frame. And if I
go civil records does anyone know the completeness vs the church
books

  Thanks for any help.

Hallo Max,

for the timeframe you are searching for I guess you won't find civil registers compared to the church registers. The reason for that is that they started with official cilvil registers just in 1874.
I don't know the experiences of the other people here, but in my cases I got more informations from the church registers. For instance you would have in the civil records just the date, place, time of birth and the parents names. In the church registers you find in addition to that names of the gods parents and where they were from. In the church register for the death you find mostly the cause of death, how many children are left, spouses. The civil register have sometimes more informatioen of the parents of the death. So after 1874 it is probably interesting to have both, before 1874 you just get the church registers or mayby adress books or other sources.

Greetings
Sabine
