Help with German

I need the help of someone who speaks German. My niece and I are translating
a chronicle written by a cousin of ours in 1936.

Here is our problem. In the chronicle Grandma isplanting sugar beets and her
granddaughter wants to help. She takes the "Stosser" from her to do the
work. In my five German dictionaries I can find the word but no definition that
would relate to gardening. Can someone help me?

I think its a shovel.

This is a wooden plug, to make a little hole into the earth to insert the roots of the sugar beets, in German: Pflanzholz.
