Recently I ran acrosss a genealogical listing for the husband of Anna Elizabeth Mollman reading "Anton Boman gt. Blesing" I am guesstimating that the "gt." means that the husband's birth surname was Boman but that he assumed the wife's surname upon marrying her due to the fact that she probably owned a farm that was in her name. Am I correct?
It may have been his mother who was Blesing, as that Anna Elizabeth Mollman
did not have that add. or his grandmother thru his father, I had to go back
3 generations before I found the marriage that gave that add. gt.= named, it
could have been the wife's family that inherited that add on but since she
is not listed as such I would be more inclinded to think it was Anton's
family. Anna Marie

Hello,
Here is my thought.
Anton Boman.........
could have been called Boman....
because he was born on the Boman farm....
His father name Blesing...
I might have this backwards....
He was called Anton Blesing..
Because he was born on the Blesing Farm...
His fathers name Boman...
I think all huerling (farm employees, including farm employees that were related to the owner of the farm)..names were recorderd after the property???
In St. Joseph's records of persons I believe are my distant grandparents... At first I figured maybe adoption...

"[Eadene] Franciscus Grotepeller fil [Jococi] Schmalhorst et Ida Kuhlage una cunc Theresia Bismeier fil Christian Bismeier et Margaretha Rehmschnier coram me infra scripto et testibus Petro Kuhlage et Maria Schroeder. Jos Weber SJ."
Franz Grotepeller/Grotephaler..father Jacob Schmallhorst, mother Ida Kuhlage..married Theresia Bismeier whose father was Christian Bismeier, mother Margaretha Rehmschnier.. the sponsers were Peter Kuhlage and Maria Schroeder..
As I understand... The father was Jacob Schmallhorst...but the son was called Grotepahler..I think Franz Grotepahlers kids were also called Grotepahler...
I think the surname originated after a farm called Grotepahler/Grotepeller???
I think if it were today... Franz Grotepahler would have been called Franz Schmallhorst...and he and Theresia's daughter Catherine would have also been called Schmallhorst...
However I think I could be wrong as it is so confusing to me... and I suppose this is point where a professional historian might be needed.
