Greetings List
My ggrandmother Therese Maria Kirschbein emigrated from Berlin to
New Orleans via Bremen in 1860. She was born in 1840 in Berlin. I
have a yellowed typewritten copy of her passport issued by an agency
in Berlin possibly by the Royal Police Presidency and signed by
Luedemann, Sect. It is unknown as to where this copy originated but I
think it was my Dad's possession and he passed it on to my
daughter-in-law. Maria Kirschbein is described as being 4'9" tall and
her statue as slim. I'm guessing she may have weighed less than 100lb.
On the passenger list of the ship she sailed on her occupation is
noted as miner. That description does not match my preception of a
miner. My question is what material was mined in the Berlin area in
the 1855 - 1860 era. I do not think the passenger manifest meant
minor. She was almost 21 at the time and was not acompanied by her
parents.
I have not in my research worked with passport archieves so I am not
knowledgeable about them. Can anyone direct me to a source, preferably
on line, that would have information including Berlin passports for
1860.
Thanks, Max
