Hannover-L Nachrichtensammlung, Band 59, Eintrag 14

Hello:
My gr, gr grandfather was born in Germany in 1801. On his US Census
forms, he said he was born in "Hannover." I believe he may have been born
in Ankum. Was Ankum considered part of Hannover at that time?
Thank you.

Hannover has been both the name of a city and the name of a duchy and a kingdom. So Ankum might have been part of this kingdom.

Please: If answering to a list email use a meaningful reference instead of "Hannover-L Nachrichtensammlung, Band 59, Eintrag 14" and avoid lengthy citations of a whole digest.

Hallo Nikolaus,
Ankum belongs to the Osnabrück government district. Maybe one can help you
here?

To complete the answers:

Ankum is part of the county Osnabrück in Lower Saxony, Germany, today. As
history was not to easy in our region, here it is for Ankum:

Ankum was belonging in / to:
.... - 1803 Fürstbistum Osnabrueck
1803 - 1807 Kurfürstentum Hannover
1807 - 1810 Königreich Westfalen (to France / Napoleon )
1810 - 1813 Kaiserrreich Frankreich (France, under Napoleon)
1814 - 1866 Königreich Hannover (connected to England)
1866 - 1945 Provinz Hannover, part of Preussen.

There is a second Ankum in the Netherlands. However that Ankum did not
belong to Hannover in any of areas, so you will be ok to find your
grandfather in Ankum near Osnabrueck.

Hope it helps,

Albert Emmerich

Hello,
I presume you are from Germany because of your email address. I am from
the U.S.
I looked at the online LDS (Morman) records to see what they have. Here
it is:

Germany, Preußen, Hannover, Ankum - Church records
Titles Kirchenbuchduplikat, 1810-1874 Katholische Kirche Ankum (Kr.
Bersenbrück)
               Kirchenbuchduplikat, 1822-1874 Evangelische Kirche Bippen
(Kr. Bersenbrück)

    Notice the name Hannover listed.

   Happy hunting,
   Barbara
