Dear Cora,
Thank you for your detailed response. I appreciate it.
Perhaps there are no Batch Numbers for Hannover?
Regards, Jan
Hi Jan,
Please don't confuse the IGI database with the LDS Library Catalog. They
are quite different animals, although both are on the LDS website.
Batch numbers are found with IGI entries. They are used to locate the
submission records of whoever entered a particular record into the IGI
database- located on a microfilm of many submission records. I entered an
on-line IGI search for George HAMILTON in Prussia, to get no results.
However, when I did an IGI search for George H. in Germany, there were three
listings. From the dates, you might get an indication if one of them is the
ancestor you search for. It's interesting that the computer screen showed
no batch numbers. I have no idea why not. My first introduction to the IGI
database was the microfiche file at my local LDS Family History Center.
Each entry on the microfiche file has Batch and Sheet numbers. Maybe a LDS
volunteer can explain why the on-line search has no batch numbers. I
actually prefer using the microfiche file to check the IGI, because it is
easier to scan for various locations. Submission records to the IGI often
have a lot of information. I learned the generations of my DAVIS family
this way.
For census data from Hannover, a "place search" (which is the LDS Salt Lake
City Library on-line catalog) turns up a census category, but when I look at
the description of the microfilm I find that there are many different
records (of a civil or court origin) lumped together on the film. I'm sure
that census records are included, hence the "census" category in the library
catalog. Microfilms included in the library catalog go by microfilm # (not
batch #). If there are several records on a microfilm, each one will have
an item #. Please let me know if I can help further. I began using LDS
records before they had a website, and still feel that it can be more
accurate to search their microfiche library catalog or the microfiche IGI
file at the local FHC.
Hope this helps,
Cora
