Dear Elizabeth,
Thank you for your extended response. I do wish I had found George
HAMILTON of Hannover on the IGI. And/or that I knew his exact place of
birth.
I have searched all of the (to me) obvious resources here in Adelaide,
in Germany and in England. I have not however been to the Lutheran
Church - it is an avenue I could try. I believe George arrived as a
mariner - do you think the Lutherans might have lists of seamen, perhaps
on ships from Hannover? I have sought the assistance of the experts at
the Genealogy Society, of which I am a member.
Thanks for the number of the LDS Distribution Centre. Are you
suggesting that they would be the best people to ask about Batch Numbers
for Hannover? I think the very silence of Listers on this issue has
provided me with my answer about the fact of their existence, however.
Thanks also for the URL for Larry O Jensen.
I have been informed by a very knowledgeable archivist in Hildesheim (I
was there earlier this year looking for George HAMILTON in the Catholic
Archives - George married a Catholic here in Adelaide in 1865) that he
is definitely not to be found in the Catholic records that relate to the
former Kingdom of Hanover. Thanks also for the URL of the Catholic
website on the history of Hannover. I'll check it out. Have you read
HW KOCH's "A History of Prussia"?
Yes I did get a comprehensive reply from the researchers HRS in response
to my question about census transcriptions.
Do you know whether there are Batch Numbers for Hannover and how to get
hold of them if they exist. There is usually at least one website
containing them elsewhere.
Regards,
Jan
