Hamburg is not in Hannover. It was a free city. The Family History Library
has limited church records for Hamburg and the records you would need have
not yet been filmed. Research at this time would still need to be through
correspondence. Because of the large size of this city, you may have to
hire a researcher there to help you.

Then perhaps he was not really from Hamburg as his death cert. says, because census records state he was from Hannover. Since next of kin give birth info on the death cert., perhaps they did not really know.
Just out of curiosity, are you married to a Japanese person? My last name is Yamamoto.
My husband's family still resides in Japan. None of them seem interested in genealogy.
