Grandfather

My grandfather, Otto Larsen Kromann, stated on his paperwork to be naturalized in the US that he lived In Dastrap (I dont' know if this spelled correctly) before immigrating to the US April 1887. He stated he sailed from Bremen, Germany and was born in Ribe, Denmark in 1875. His sisters came to the US before he did and his father came after. We don't know anything about his mother. His father was Jens Kromann born in Prussia in 1835. His sisters were Maren Jensen Kromann, Kristine Kromann, and Gerbine (spelling may not be right) Kromann. Would there be any record of him or his family somewhere? I have searched the internet and gotten replies from people that live in Denmark and Germany and they can't help me. Any information would be helpful.. Thank you in advance. Carolyn (Kromann) Frame at carolynframe2000@yahoo.com

Have a great day, Carolyn

I think that Dastrup ist the Danish Döstrup in Tönder county

You'll find the censuses from this parish at
ddd.dda.dk

In the Census 1840 there ist this family:
toender, Tønder, Højer og Lø, Døstrup (Kongerigsk), Døstrup Bye, , et Huus, 34 F2, FT-1840
Christian Kromann, 45 , Gift, , Inderste og Bødker,
Anne Jensdatter, 38 , Gift, , hans Kone,
Lars J. Kromann, 9 , Ugift, , deres Børn,
Jens C. Kromann, 7 , Ugift, , deres Børn,
Johanne Kromann, 4 , Ugift, , deres Børn,
Maren Kromann, 2 , Ugift, , deres Børn,

Jens C. Kromann might be your
Jens Kromann born in Prussia in 1835

Not alle censuses are available; you might find informations from the census 1880 in county Ribe, but you'll find no Prussian censuses (of Nordschleswig -i.e. from Döstrup ) from 1864 to 1920 - they were destroyed.

The birth records of Döstrup are available at www.arkivalieronline.dk; you have to get a password. Unfortunately this site is still only in Danish.

I hope you manage to find out more; if not try the DisForum 'Find your relatives in Denmark' at DIS-Forum

Hi Carolyn;

If he was born in Denmark and his dad was born in Prussia, its pretty likely that he came from Schleswig--a region in N. Europe which changed hands between Germany and Denmark. Modern Schleswig-Holstein (S-H) is in Germany, but a part of the old Schleswig (the northern part of S-H) is in Denmark. I'd concentrate on records from Schleswig and southern Denmark if I were you.

Cheers, Wayne

Thank you Wayne. Carolyn
