This is my first post to this list. I have ancestors that came from Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. What is the Grand Duchy? Is it a county, city or ???

Former was the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg an own State, the Capital is the town Oldenburg.
Today is it a province and a part of the State Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony).
The north part is mainly Lutherans and the south mainly Catholis.
