I am looking for the parents of John William Gottlock. He was born in
Lehe, Hannover, GErmany according to his Marriage Certificate. He was
born in Oct 1856.
Hello Barbara,
There is more than one Lehe in the Hannover area. Were your people
Catholic? If so, that would narrow it down a bit since there a Lehe in the
Emsland area, which is usually Catholic. Have you ever looked at the film
the LDS has for Lehe? I think that is the one in the Bremerhaven area.
Those are Evangelical records.
That is an unusual name. Is there any chance it was something else at
one time? Maybe it's just unusual as my elusive ancestors Gügelmeyer are!

Dear Barbara,
I believe that the LDS Family History Center that I go to has the
Evangelical parish records for the Lehe just north of Bremerhaven on
indefinite loan. I will check the records tomorrow to see if there are any
records for Gottlock between 1840 and 1852. The records only go through
1852, so I will not be able to find the baptismal record for your ancestor.
I may be able to find a marriage record for his parents, however. If we do
find some Gottlock's in the records, you can then write directly to the
church in Lehe -- hopefully they will have the 1856 baptismal records.

There is nowadays no such name as GOTTLOCK, but I found 3 GOTTLACK, 3 GOTTLAND
and 6 GOTTLASS / GOTTLA. Besides this reading or writing error may have led to
GOTTLOCK out of GOTTLOB. Families with the latter name are some hundred. In case
of interest in the adresses out of 1995 just give me a mail. The most similar
names GOTTLACK were from Bremen and Nrnberg. Lehe is also a suburb, respectively
a town quarter of Bremen. Greetings Hans Peter Albers
