German News Items

Dear Hannoverl,

Are marriage, death and burial announcements published in the local newspapers?

I attempted to google.de various German online news publications without success.

Grateful for any assistance in correct language to use.

Warmest Regards,

Barbie-Lew

Lieber Hannoverl,

Wrmster Respekt,
Barbie-Lew

but keep in mind that these are completely private announcements, containing as a "standard" only name, birth and death dates of the deceased person, mostly nothing about his/her biography, no details about the family except a list of names of the "mourning persons left behind" - you sometimes can guess the relationships. Do not compare these announcements with the obituaries published in, say, American newspapers which give many interesting details for family research.

Hello Ralph,

Thanks for the lead.

Is this data strictly a volunteer driven site? I did a quick search for the name Speckmann and got about 20 hits when I know there are thousands of Speckmann in Germany. Perhaps I am not using the search properly.

Barney Speckman

Hello Barney,

yes indeed, it is only a volunteer site. Only a very small amount
of German papers are covered. So you have to be lucky to find the
Speckmann surname you are looking for. You will only find the name
if it is in one of the covered places. Another limitation is, that
the project started just around 2001/2002, so it is unlikely to
find much older information. Although many volunteers are trying to
clip the newspapers backward, as they are available.
