German names

In the years of 1700-1800 I have found many names similar. Gottfried
and Gott which means the same.
Would Goddert also be same as Gott? One name is listed as Gerhard or
Goddert on birth certificate. I thought this meant Gerry. Thanks for
any help. These first names really create a problem.

Hello Herb,
yes, it means the same: Gottfried, Grdt, Goddert, Gerhard
and sometimes Friedrich too.

The parents wanted, that their son could live in peace
with GOD ( -> Gott = God and Friede = peace).
