George Edward Hattorf in New York, or the never ending story

Dear members of the list
George Edward Hattorf, the endless story, we have had a discussion about him
some weeks ago. Meanwhile i have got his pension files from NARA. Very good
32 pieces of paper full of informations. So i should be happy shouldn’t I?
I told you before i never could find him in the 1870, 1880 and 1900 census.
Well he was about 10 years old as his father Frederick A. Hattorf, puts him
in an orphenage. His mother Julia M. Hattorf died around 1855.
He never knew his real date of birth, so he was talking of September 1844,
1845, 1846, 1847…… so to search him means to search all years between 1843
and 1848.
He was a volunteer in the army in 1862 but he was not 18 as he thought he
was just 16 years old, when he served together with his brother Frederick in
the 13th New York Artillery.
After his military duty he was for a certain time in the army corps, but he
is DEFINITIFELY back in New York City in the year 1876 and he stayed there
till his end in 1911. (even he died in Florida, perhaps he made a holiday trip
or whatever)
But now the hardest shock, to get his military pension he explained …… I
WAS NEVER MARRIED !!!
So i have only a Georger Hatorf in the 1910 census, single born 1845, what
is the absolut correct date of birth same year of birth as in the 1850 census
New York. So i have no doubt that this is the right one.
But he is not in 1880 and not in 1900. Yes I know we have been talking about
a GEORGE HATTORF who is listet in the 1900 census living in New York born
around 1848 salesman, with wife Jennie and 3 boys Fredrick, August and George.
IF i say IF George was never married who is that George Hattorf in the 1900
census??? A misspelling of Huttorf or Hottorf??? But why cant i find then
ONE of those 5 persons in the 1900 census in another census year even using
only the first name and the year of birth even if their family name would be
Barbarella i should find them. Nothing in 1910, 1920 and 1930 and the 3 boys
are much to young to die. Perhaps one could have had an accident but not all
3. And the names Frederick, August and George absolutely perfect. The name of
the father, the grandfather and the brother of the father of George Edward,
but he was not married i know….
Or was George Edward Hattorf a …. liar??? Didn’t he want to spend his 12
dollar pension with his wife, cause he has left his family?
Any suggestions and any ideas how I can identify that George in the 1900
census???
My best to you all Armin

Dear Armin,

Based on 1900 NY Federal Census data here:

1900 NY Federal Census with Hattorf Family…
George E. born 1847 - Born New York- salesman
Jennie? born 1849 - Germany - housewife - gives 1870 to U.S. /30 years in U.S…
YEARS IN CURRENT MARRIAGE - 26 [c.a. 1874)
George??/Henry??? (hard to read)- watchmaker - born 1877
August - plate printer -born 1879
Fredrich - porter - born 1882

WestThrid Street, Manhattan Boro, New York City, New York

............According to above 1900 NY census data :

Marriage & subsequent birth of children happend several years AFTER the end of the civil war...(Wife Jennie to USA to USA 1870) ......

Dear Armin,

What I meant to suggest in my poorly written initial reply is ....

This link...

Part about ...Frederick Weston, Company G, 106th N.Y. Infantry.........mentions there was no pension file because ..........

"There is no pension file relating to Frederick because he was not married and did not have any minor children or aged parents dependant upon him for support."

So I am wondering if the data you recieved was actually application for pension? If it was a pension file... Is there an actual application included? If an application..is there a date on the application? An address? Is there mention of anyone other than George?

Could the data you recieved be compiled service record? Or unit muster roll compiled prior to George's marriage that only includes data known during George's time of service?

Is there mircrofilm reference number on data you recieved?

And ...

My bad... your trying to figure out who the George Hattorf is in the 1900 census... because the pension file you recieved matches an unmarried George Hattorf discovered on the 1910 census.

Might there have been a divorce???

P.S. Does file you recieved include undertaker name or funeral director? If he died in Florida is there a Florida death certificate?? Is it possible to obtain Florida death certificate?

If George 1900 with wife and family is the 1910 single George who died in Florida circa 1911 ..are same individuals..perhaps Jennie, and the children August, George/Henry?, Frederick might also be found residing with other relatives.

Stretch.............kids enumerated 1900 census were female???
Augusta rather than August?
Henrietta /Georgette rather than Heny/George??
Fredericka..rather than Frederick...

Maybe try.... NY easy death search for surname sounds-like ........

Hatoff/Hattorf/Hidorph..etc.. maybe something new turn up

Or ends with...dorp/dopp/doph/toph/torph/torp/turff/torf...etc...
