Is there anything like this in English? I am new to this list as my great great grandparents were from Germany and I am looking for information from the areas of Neustift and Vilshofen. My great great grandfather was Franz Xaverius Altmann b. 1834 in Neustift he married Magdalena Lenegger (I am not sure of this spelling) married in 1846 (?) this year is questionable too as Franz would only be 12 years old. Maybe should be 1856? I do not know who could help me in these areas. Franz and Magdalena (Lena she was called) had 3 children in Neustift before coming to the USA. My great grandfather Joseph was born in 1867 in Neustift and the next child born was in Tilden WI in 1872. I have information on the Altmann side but not Lenegger as I am sure this is not the correct spelling. I would appreciate any and all help. Thank you.

Hi Carol,

Have you checked www.familysearch.org ? There is only
one entry for your ancestor M. Lenegger. Have you
tried to contact the person who submitted the
information? He indicated a marriage range of dates
for Franz Xaverius Altmann as between 1858 and 1888.
Anyhow, his name and address are located on the
"submitter's information" web page.

Another help may be "Surname Helper" which is located
at

Choose:
"Surname and selected soundex equivalents".

There looks like there may be a couple of good matches
close to Lenegger.

Finally which Vilshofen are you referring to? There
are two or three places with this name. Neustift had
many, many more locations. I looked at the Town
Locater to find the information:
Central/Eastern Europe:
http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/LocTown.asp

This can at least give you a start. If you find
Vilshoven is the one in Lower Bavaria ( now referred
to as County Passau ) there is more information at:

http://wiki-en.genealogy.net/wiki/Niederbayern_(Lower_Bavaria)

Hopefully someone with more expertise of these areas
can help you out.

Kathleen
