Well, I took the bull by the horns so to speak and started my Wiki page and it wasn't so hard, in fact it was easy, and I am a real clutz when it comes to web pages, so take that as encouragement to start your own.
One question though, there is one paragraph of my text that is in some kind of box and I can't get it out. I am probably doing something silly but please let me know how to fix that. Otherwise it went really well, even got my photos sized and put up there though they aren't very big. Still the space is free and hopefully will bring in some "new to me" relatives.
Is there a way to get it translated to German easily, or when a German-speaker visits can they see a translated page?? I know when I go to an untranslated page I get immediately lost and confused, so it would be nice if there were an auto translator available for German speakers or for that matter for English Speakers on a German page. I know not everything translates correctly but at least it gives you a chance at getting the jist of a page. Otherwise it is just gobbledigook and there isn't any way to know if it might be of interest.
But thanks for making this even more of a joint effort for all.

Looking for Egenberger, Guthman(n) from Waldhausen, Baden; and Schiele from Bretten, Baden.
I admire your courage to take the bull by the horns..
but which bull did you take on ?? I'm sure you have spent
a lot of time and I looked all around, but unfortunately
can't find any records of it..
Did you forget to click on the " Save Page" button before
leaving the page ?? It would be a shame if your masterpiece
would be lost in the "universe"... Would you have a copy of it
or could you make up another one ??
The same thing happened to Sabina yesterday, she entered a
lot of things and probably forgot to save it..
I'm sending this over the whole list, just to make sure that
everyone remembers this...
This is VERY important !!
Click on the "Save Page" button before finalizing things !!!!!
hahahaaaa, no WOLF
Hallo Wolf,
Nooooo, I didn't forget to click Save, but BUT I did not follow your steps. That part I didn't even think about. I just played, but today I followed your steps...and well, we shall see.
What fun though.
It took me two or three tries to successfully enter and save an entry on my page. The first two times I clicked the edit box under User. The Edit page opened and I wrote some text, but when I saved, everything just disappeared. On my third try I did it differently. I clicked on Discussion and then opened the Edit page. The Edit page under Discussion is identical to the one that opens with User, but with the one under Discussion, your text is saved when you hit the Save button. The Edit page under User doesn't seem to save. Maybe that button only works for special people.

Ok, you have this "thing" to start a "paragraph" with " " (two spaces). This is something special for a wikipedia

I dont think so. If you are a hard-working researcher, I dont think that the language would make you surrender. All of us can always see "our" names even in another language which we dont speak. (ok not chinese, but we dont talk about that now.) And then you can get start to get help from somewhere ..
Some time ago somebody mentioned that using "auto translators" really make crazy stuff.
So I think we should NOT use that automatically. Everybody can use it on its own, if he wants to. But just private. We should always translate our pages by handcraft.
I just went into my data that I had entered under "talk" or discussion and it has completely disappeared including the photo that Wolf had downloaded last night.
I have now re-instated the 'profile' of myself, but I also cannot figure out why it would disappear.
Somehow something makes me think that GenWiki is a little difficult to handle for us newer "Users".
Please, maybe someone could now check if I still have some text visible under my name: Sabina. It should be there, but I dare not look, after all the work I did to get it there in the first place and then to have it disappear and me having to re-load it once more minus the photo.
This is not a criticism, I just need help please or clarification.
Thank you,
Sabina.
Thanks for your help. Can I move my User page information from wiki-commons to wiki-en or do I need to re-enter it on wiki-en? Am I correct that the difference between them is that wiki-en is in English? If so, would it be better if my User page entry on wiki-commons were in German instead of English. I could put a link to my wiki-en page on my commons page and a link to wiki-commons on my wiki-en page. Is there a wiki site map somewhere to make it easier to navigate within the site?
I just went into my data that I had entered under "talk" or discussion
- please confirm that you are in your English wiki: http://wiki-en.genealogy.net
and not in wiki-commons. Latter is only for uploading media (e.g. image) files!
and it has completely disappeared including the photo that Wolf had downloaded last night.
- if you want to show a picture please enclose the image file line
Image:Sabina.JPG
in [] to get, e.g. [[Image:Sabina.JPG]]. I already did the changes on your user pages, so look at please. http://wiki-en.genealogy.net/wiki/user:Sabina

No, the page (article) is user:Sabina, because it is NOT a genealogical article but an user page (article)
Can I move my User page information from wiki-commons to wiki-en
sorry - no.
or do I need to re-enter it on wiki-en?
unfortunately
wiki-en is in English?
wiki-de is the German ...
wiki-en the English ...
wiki-nl the Dutch ...
... genealogical wiki.
wiki-commons is the common (!) place for media files (images and others) for use in ALL three wikis.
So, your user page first of all should be in "your" wiki - wiki-en.
if you want you can leave the user page in commons, a lot of (or most of) GenWiki users understand English enough...
If so, would it be better if my User page entry on wiki-commons were in German instead of English.
If you want to be perfect, write your user page in commons in all languages you handle
I could put a link to my wiki-en page on my commons page and a link to wiki-commons on my wiki-en page. Is there a wiki site map somewhere to make it easier to navigate within the site?
write in wiki-commons in your "wiki-text" [[en:User:AuchDabei]] and you will see (after preview or save) at the left hand side a link to your "native" page.
A direct link into commons is not configured. The Link into German wiki would be [[de:Benutzer:AuchDabei]].
Thank you, Bill. That's re-assuring to know. Maybe it will stay for the night, lol.
Maybe my image will even re-appear just as it disappeared??
Miracles, miracles.....
I found your picture too, but now it's on your User page on wiki-en under your name. I think when you saw it before it was in the commons area where pictures are downloaded. The User page on wiki-en looks just like the one on wiki-commons, but they are different. The chat room that you get when you click on Recent Changes is different too. The commons seems to be used for uploads of pictures and documents and such. The en seems to be more for talking and posting things you want people to see. I've got bookmarks now to both of my User pages and I put a link to the other on each page so I can go back and forth from one to the other.
I haven't the slightest idea how to make a new page or add a photo. Tried and tried and keep getting error messages, no matter how much I read the information. Think this is too much for me. Will just keep putting names on the easier part of it when I can. Have a tree and photos on a different site and it is much easier to work with. Just can't figure this one out.
Dolly Hauf
Haha,
Hello Wolf,
that's how I felt yesterday also. My inbox was full because a lot of emails were asking for access to the actual Datenbank and I could not answer it either.
And yes, all my problems have been beautifully solved thanks to our List. And easily too. Once one knows, it's easy in GenWiki, it is just the "Knowing" part that is difficult and the Asking. One tends to feel intimidated.
One question though now that you have 'conned' me into writing something in the 'personal' page: when or where do I find the access to STEP no. 3 or 4 and when does Night School start???
I think we have waited long enough for the first enrollment, so why not start?
Glad you are back, on my side of the Atlantic.
Sabina.
If anybody needed and needs help with GenWiki or many other things related to genealogy, it is ME. All I can say is that if you need help, shout. Everyone on this list will jump and help. Don't be afraid to ask like me, though I am getting better at asking and learning.
Genealogy is not for the faint hearted. (if you know what I mean?).
Kind regards,
Sabina.
