Looking for information on my grandfather, George E. Schmidt to came from Germany in 1885 thru New York, with his sister Johanna and he came on to Wise Co, VA. My mother, Susannah Gwendolyn Schmidt Lawson was only 4 when he was killed in some kind of accident so I really do not know much about him only that he married Mary Martha Kirk about 1898. Guide me as to where I can get birth records or just anything.

Schmidt is not a name to look for, without knowing where you want to look.
In my familytree I have 4 times Schmidt - and there is no connection. This
name you find everywhere in Germany.
I think you should look for the immigration-papers and find out his place of
birth and date of birth. Otherwise I see no chance.

Perhaps you could start with researching your grandfather's wife, ie. your grandmother and go from there? Search the LDS records, that might give you some clue, though they are not perfect.. Try rootsweb and ancestry.com
And if you wait for a few weeks, I have just bought the Western European name Index and who knows, the name might be listed there.
I will be sending a short message across the list for anyone who might want me to look up names when I receive it.
Also would your mother not remember where he lived when he got married? Perhaps if you could start your search in Wise Co., Va.?
