if you cannot type the umlaut, just add an e after the letter.
This is or was often done in Germany, when the typewriter did
not have the umlaut, and everybody here still understands it.
In internet addresses we still convert the letter with umlaut
to letter + e.Your last name probably was Knäbel in German.
Example:
Günterode = Guenterode
ä = ae
ö = oeDiether
