[Genealogy.net-users-en] BREUER

I am looking for a family in Germany called Breuer.

Joseph and Cresentia were parents of Franz and Karl (born 1880).

Originated: Ellwangen.

Karl travelled to England in 1900 and changed his name to Brenner.

Any information would be gratefully received.

Hello,

why do you think your ancestors where called Breuer in Ellwangen ? I don`t
see any reason to change the name.

in today phonebook - there are 76 Brenner in the two different Ellwangen in
Germany
and no !! Breuer.
[75 Brenner in 7347. Ellwangen Jagst - and only 1 Brenner in 88430
Ellwangen]

In a old German handwriting - I believe, nobody who did not learn the
differences between "u" und "n" is able to decide, which letter it is. To
make it a bit more complicated - you can have both signs with a " - " on
top. If it is a "n" - then it means "nn" - if it is a "u" - the dash looks a
little bit more like a bow , a curving line, the "nn" has a straight line.

Look this link and tell, if you can decide in a handwriting wether there is
a "u" or a "nn".

In this case I can`t believe that anyone changed his name.

Maybe you like to look this link:

This is so very helpful! Thank you very much.
We have always known the family to be Brenner, but looking closely at Karl
Brenner's Reise-Pass, his name appears with the "-" symbol, which made us
think he was a Breuer! Now we understand the old German writing.
Your information is very helpful - incidentally, it is Ellwangen Jagst.
Could you suggest how I might look back for his parents now please? The
census for 1895 in Germany does not appear on the Internet.
I am visiting Ellwangen on 1st June 2006, so any suggestions you may have
will be greatly appreciated.
What a lovely surprise to get a reply that is so helpful!
Many thanks, Joy.

Thank you for this link too Christina.
Best wishes, Joy.

Hello Joy,

for 1895 you will not find any census - it is under "Datenschutz"
(protection of privacy? Secrecy ? Data Security ?))

You could go to the Standesamt Ellwangen and ask for the birth certificate
of your great grandfather - but you have to prove that he really is your
great grandfather and show your passport - and look wether there are more
informations about the parents. You could ask there for the
marriage-certificate too.
(A copy or the original of his passport will be a good beginning)

Without a proof of your filiation (descent ? parentage ?) you will not get
anything past 1875.

I do not know the Baden-Wuerttemberg archives - but I can ask the
Ba-Wue-List. How long will you be able to look into your mails, before
leaving ?

Greetings
Christine

Dear Christine,
Thank you so much for your help with this.
I do have a copy of his passport and should have copies of birth
certificates for his son (my Grandfather), his other children, my Mother, my
own and my marriage certificate. Do you think that would give proof of
descendancy?
I am so very grateful for this help.
If you could ask the Ba-Wue List on my behalf before I go, it may give me
extra help when I get there, so please do what you can.
I am able to receive email until 31st May.
If I can help with anything in England for you, please let me know.
Best wishes, Joy.
