[Genealogy.net-users-en] Atlas des Deutschen Reichs and Gazetteer

Peggy and others,

When looking to locate a place name in Germany, I search the gazetteer that accompanies the Atlas des Deutschen Reichs at this site: http://www.library.wisc.edu/etext/ravenstein/ .

As explained there: "Place-names and political jurisdictions often change over time. A common challenge in genealogy is identifying the current name and jurisdiction of a family's place of origin in order to figure out where the records of births, deaths, and marriages of an earlier period are now being kept. Comparison of the Ravenstein atlas and a recently published atlas often provides the solution to this problem."

I hope this helps you with your problem.

Hi Cheryl,

When looking to locate a place name in Germany, I search the
gazetteer that accompanies the Atlas des Deutschen Reichs at this
site: http://www.library.wisc.edu/etext/ravenstein/ .

As explained there: "Place-names and political jurisdictions often
change over time. A common challenge in genealogy is identifying the
current name and jurisdiction of a family's place of origin in order
to figure out where the records of births, deaths, and marriages of
an earlier period are now being kept. Comparison of the Ravenstein
atlas and a recently published atlas often provides the solution to
this problem."

but I don't see a possibility to search within the place-names there with an engine.

If you want to have another thing like "ravenstein", without fast searching but with manually navigating, you can check:

"Ritters geografisch-statistisches Lexikon"
http://wiki-de.genealogy.net/wiki/Ritters_geografisch-statistisches_Lexikon

http://genealogie.dilib.info/

on the left make:

Pfad der aktuellen Ebene
Genealogische Bibliothek
  Genealogische Bibliothek
  Ritter: Geografisch statistisches Lexikon, 1895
   S

then you can choose "Segrate - Serbien 11 Seite(n)" if you search for that "Seeldorf" ...

Regards
Eric
