Hi, Julia,
thanks for your comments, I really like a challenge and try to answer as good as I can..

1 - rootsweb / ancestry.com has already created chaos with their "gate-waying" (ie: CCing) messages from their ancestry AND rootsweb message boards to their corresponding mailing lists. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but G-P-L doesn't seem to have a corresponding message board that's attached to this mailing site.)
Yes, you are right, I tried to get a message board for the GPL list, but had no success and co-operation from rootsweb..
It's extremely confusing when people on the mailing lists reply to these "gate-wayed" messages, not realizing that the original posters will never see those replies. All message board posts are forwarded to the mailing lists, but NONE of the mailing list posts are "back-warded?" to the message boards.
To reply to a message board post, you have to follow the link within the forwarded message back to the board, register, log in, and reply. Your reply will then be seen on both the message board AND the mailing list. Confused yet? I don't understand why they did this!
Yes, I agree with you.. It is very confusing.. Our Saxony list has a message board, but most of the replies
just go to the Saxony list and never reach the message board..
That is one of the main reasons, why we started our own board.. It is just about a week old and already had over 1,300 visitors.. You will never reach that many people with just a single mailing list and in addition, all the search engines are distributing the data all over the internet.. But, not to many people know about us, yet..
If Wolf decides to abandon G-P-L on rootsweb in order to concentrate his efforts on the new site, then it'll drift if nobody wants to take over. If the main contributors decide to go with him, then the mailing list has no value and will most likely fold as queries aren't replied to.
Well, that is not the issue, at least not yet.. Why can't we have the mailing lists AND the board..
There is nothing wrong with the mailing lists, but with the board we will reach a lot more people..
Our English-speaking lists have close to 3,000 subscribers and when we add our German lists, this will add another 3,000 subscribers.. Why can't we all work together ??

Of, course, Diana, we should discuss all the options, pro and contra, since this is the only way to move ahead..
Nice talking to all of you and have a nice Sunday evening,
