Hello Deborah,
My thoughts on the origins of your names are to do with regional sounds. All
countries have different regional ways of speaking/pronouncing vowels. Many
'EHLERS' can be seen to move to a region which spells the name as it sounds
e.g. ELLERS or EHLIS or AYLERS and BECKER becomes BACKER.
I wonder if there is a German resident on the list who could suggest whether
you should look in a north, south, east or west region in the Kingdom of
Hannover.
Best wishes,
Rena in England
Dear Rena,
I absolutely think you're right.
I haven't tried Ellers or Aylers - I'll look into those.
Right now I'm trying to tie in Fredrick Backer/Frederick Baker to the American Civil War. These 2 names show up in the 113th Illinois Infantry and they list a description/occupation on the Muster Roll. I understand that many names were written phonetically on these lists (Fredrick Backer and Frederick Baker may be the same person). I am waiting for results on this.
I am very interested in the American Civil War and have attended 2 Civil War re-enactments. In Sept. will be my third. Many immigrants to the US signed up as soldiers (and lived to tell about it).
Thanks for your ideas, Deborah
Hi Deborah,
I'm still hunting, but no success so far. Are you aware of the
Marriage Index in Illinois:
http://www.sos.state.il.us/GenealogyMWeb/marrsrch.html
I once discovered a maiden name there for someone. Unfortunately, I
didn't find the marriage of your Fred and Dorothea there. You might check
there every now and then. It is an ongoing project. I wish every state had
such an index.
Let us know when you learn the names and birthplaces of your
great-grandparents. We searched for my great-grandmother's maiden name for
some 20 years! That was mostly before the internet. But we did find her
eventually--just as you will eventually!

Hi Barbara,
I just became acquainted with it this month. I wish all the states had such accessible info.
Lucky for me, my Father's line lived many years in this state.
Friedrich and Dorothea Becker had 3-sons:
Friedrich William Baker (Fred Baker) born 1873
Charles Theodore Baker born 1876 (my Grandfather)
George William Baker born 1881
Apparently, they were never interested in their family history, though.
I have quite a bit of info on them thanks to Ancestry.com (censuses, WWI draft) and my Father's memory. But his parents were 40+ yrs when he was born and Friedrich and Dorothea were already long gone. I'm sure eventually I'll find a valuable clue. Thanks again.
Regards, Deborah
Hallo,
I have copied all persons with the name of Becker in my family file. If
you find somebody of interest to you let me know.
Wolfgang

Hello,
There are LDS church records for Alt Wallmoden, which is very near to
Neuwallmoden:
Kirchenbuchduplikat, 1854-1874 Evangelische Kirche Alt Wallmoden (Kr.
Goslar)
I would guess that people from Neuwallmoden would go to church there or
possibly to Lutter which is just south:
Kirchenbuchduplikat, 1854-1874 Evangelische Kirche Lutter (Kr. Goslar)
These records are on the same microfilm.
Good luck in your search,
Barbara
Thank you.
