Hello Werner,
You're coming to my rescue again. Last year I purchased a Lohne CD from you. It was enormously helpful. I was able to get everyone from that branch of the family to at least the late 1600s.
The more I look at this, the more I believe the family came from the area the Cloppenburg, Dinklage Damme area, or perhaps just a tad bit east from there. I think the responses and the terrific suggestions I'm getting to my posting is going to help alot.
I didn't think to mention before that Henrich Foth and Elisabeth Assmann had married in Germany. They had 4 children before they left for the U.S. in 1881, and then settled for a while in New Vienna Iowa until 1900, when they moved to near Bancroft in Kossuth County Iowa.
A cousin of mine once looked in the Damme records for Assmann for me, but he didn't see anything useful. Maybe I'll get the microfilm and look again myself.
By the way, is the number before "Osterdamme" the year of emigration?
B Rgds
Linda
