Forschung in Celle

Dear Klaus, all,

I saw the message re Celle, which includes my family name Opperman.
I am at a disadvantage, that I have no German.
Could someone explain the message for me.
Or pass on on my behalf that I would be interested to know in what
context the message has come up?

My ancestor Otto Friedrich's wife Anna Dorothea Rahlfs came from Celle.

Terry

Hi Terry,

Klaus just mentioned that the place name Celle hardly gets a mention in this
list and he is wondering if there is a list just for Celle genealogy. Klaus
then lists the names and places he is researching. He says that he never had
any answers from the list regarding queries to those names. Klaus' OPPERMANN
are from Celle and Heinum.

Hope this helps
Kind regards

Guten Morgen, alles!
Klaus and Terry, your comment below got me thinking.
I'm looking for Mnk or variations in Munkeboe, just outside Engerhafe and near Marionhafe north of Aurich. According to oral tradition, Harm D. Mnk was born January 1, 1843 in Hannover, German; came to the US in 1856 at age 13 on an unknown vessel, married Gretje Kirks Conrad (b. 20 Oct 1848 in Moorhusen, Ostfriesland) on 15 Sept. 1865 in Fairbury, IL, and d. 6 Sept. 1906 in Osceola, NE. My requests to the list produce nothing.

I have searched through the Engerhafe records for 1843 and found nothing. Various other Mnks appear as godparents etc., but apparently Harm was not baptized in Engerhafe, where the rest of the community went for such rituals. Travels and health have prevented me from searching very far into the other years in the LDS microfilm.

Are there other people on the List who have researched Engerhafe and/or Mnkeboe? I would enjoy hearing from them and learning what results they obtained. Also, I have not searched the civil records which may exist.

I am planning a trip to Aurich in the fall of 2007. Does anyone have suggestions about how to arrange contacts with resources there?

Thanks very much,

Hi Terry,

Have you looked at the LDS website?
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

There is a Anna Dorothea Rahlfs from Celle, but in the 1700's. There may be
others - I didn't go through everything. Just use the surname of Rahlfs.
Some may have variations of the Rahlf name. The spelling of surnames often
change through the years.

The LDS has many, many microfilms on Celle - Church records, etc.
You can order the microfilm at a LDS center and view it there.

You may have already looked into the LDS records.
