hello,
Who can give me information onto the origin of the first name " Osman " in :
"Jean, Baptiste, Osman, WINKELMANN" ?
Thanks for help.
Jean-Claude Billon
Hello Jean-Claude,
Osman is a Turkish name, nowadays a first as well a family name. The Turkish
royal family was named Osman after their famous ancestor (the "Osman Empire").
On the other hand Osmar / Osmer is a lower German name (mar = famous). Could
there possibly be a reading error?
Maybe this can be a little help to you.

Hello Jürgen,
Thanks for your help. I'm very surprised. All I know about Jean Baptiste
Osman WINKELMANN is :
- he was born in France, 15.07.1806. His only first name on the birth act is
OSMAN.
I checked it on the copy I wrote from the birth register where I found it,
26 years ago, and on the photocopy that I have made later. Many other acts
show this first name, but not alone, as into Jean Baptiste Osman, or Jean
Osman.
- his father was Philippe André WINKELMANN, coming from Germany, maybe
Hannover. He was a trader,
- his mother was Marie Delphine CASTAING, ° 1775 Bordeaux, France.
(cf. my message to FamNord, 06.05.2001)
A grand-son, born 1880, was named OSMANN. On his death act, 1885, his name
is Mathieu-François-Fortuné-Osman.
Was there, in Germany, a custom to name a child "Osman" in the 18th or 19th
centuries?
If so, does it mean that his relatives or ancestors belonged to a turkish
family ?
Friendly,
Jean-Claude
Hello Jean-Claude,
It is really a strange thing: Turkish (Islam) names in Christian families. It is
the first time that I heard such a thing.
I cant remember if there were special ties between France and the Turkish
empire under the Napoleon reign that may have lead to an adoption of Turkish
names.
I came across the family name Win(c)kelmann in the Rotenburg/Wmme (northern
Lower Saxony) region.
Sorry that I cannot be of any further help.
Best regards,

Hello Jürgen,
Thank you again for your advice. As you were the only one to answer
me, it seems to be a very rare case. I keep searching in Germany where
this family came from, and begin to study the Turkey's History ...
Best regards,
