I found my Grandfather (John Peter Claussen) in the 1910 Federal Census
for Jay Township, Martin County
Minnesota. It shows his year of immigration, but it is very hard to
read. Looks like it could be 1873, but
it's hard to tell.

Hi Edith,
I think that makes more sense. That would put him around 24 yrs of
age when he emigrated. If his parents did not come as well, that would make
him a little young in 1860. (unless the parents had died and he came with
other people). I can't find the correct ship list in the obvious sites, but
I haven't found some of my own relatives anywhere! I am wondering if he
might have come from the port in Hamburg - I think many of the people from
the Scandinavian countries came that way. Holstein is obviously north of
Hamburg as well.
If you find any other clues anywhere, let us know!

Schleswig and Holstein were two provinces that went back
and forth between Denmark and Germany in wars. Sweden
also captured the northern part of Germany for a time.
History books are important to understanding family history.
You can go onto the web sites of Amazon or Barnes & Noble
and often find good used books for a small price. Or go to
your local library.
