Hi Jean

I can tell you what I did....I found where they died and got death
certificates and obits from the papers and found the church that they
attended and they had info in their records. But, be forewarned , they
sometimes spelled it like it sounded and I am still trying to find this
place in Germany but, you might be luckier than I have been.

This particular family was well respected in their area and she was a mid
wife and signed a great deal of births in the town registry in the U.S.

Good luck!

Pat

Hi Jean,
I remember looking for your people before. However, I don't remember
what I suggested (if anything) at that time. Searching for ancestors that
were Catholic in Hannover is extremely difficult. They simply have not
allowed their records to be microfilmed by the LDS. So, I have a couple
suggestions:
There were 2 census of the archdiocese of Munster (which would cover
most of the Catholics in the Hannover area in 1649 and 1749). Look at this
website which will include information about that census and give other
suggestions for your search:

   http://www.emslanders.com/sources.htm#Emsland%20Chruch

The area called Emsland in the Hannover area is a mainly Catholic area.

If you have not done a search on the German site, do this:

      http://www.genealogienetz.de/genealogy.html

Do a general search in the box. Also do the Metasearch on the right. I
tried that myself and found Rothers, but I don't know what would fit for
your people. There's one section there that will show Catholic or
Evangelical records. Also there are some email addresses that may help
you. I think they are mainly German persons who put their family trees on
that site.
I went to Germany myself and did research at the Osnabruck diocese. I
didn't have enough time to finish and I'm still trying to find the loose
ends. Look at this page and you will find more information about the
Catholic diocese center in Meppen.

    http://www.kgverband-meppen.de/familienforschung.html

The center at Meppen (or maybe the Osnabruck center itself, I don't
know) will do research for you at the rate of 16 E an hour. I haven't used
that source yet, but I may have to if I cannot find info any other way. I
don't see that we will be going to Germany a 3rd time!
That's all I can think of now. I must tell you I found the birthplace
of my great-grandmother through a very helpful person in Germany, but I
don't feel I can mention his name lest he be bombarded with requests. Maybe
you'll find him or another fine person to help you.
One last thing, just because most of the Catholics in Hannover were in
one area is not to say that they weren't sprinkled elsewhere!
Amen,
Barbara Stewart

Hello Jean,

I dont know, if it may help, because they might answer you, please give us at
first name, town and exact date of birth, but there is for all Catholic people one
place in Mnchen, which give in normal cases needed Papers of birth, death and
marriages. So you might try to be lucky at:

Katholisches Kirchenbuchamt
des Verbandes
der Dizesen Deutschlands
Dachauer Str.50
80335 Mnchen

So this was at least the address in 1994 and I think Barbara Stewart is right try
first to get a document from th place of death. Good Luck. Hans Peter Albers

Jean: I just happened to have the Germans to America ships list. This is
what I found

Anna Maria Rother
age 59
Female
Last residence Hannover
Arrived Oct 3 1865
Dest. New York
Ship Everhard Delius
Capt M H Hohnholz
Manifest # 00010570
From Bremen
Cabin

Catherine was 19 at this time

At the LDS library they have a book on the ships arriving in New York city.
I looked up the date (this for mine) and ordered the film and found my
elusive ancestor. I did not know that the LDS had a book. But I got a
picture of everyone on the ship. It was really neat.
