Do any list members know of a text or tutorial that details a filing
system for genealogy hard copy, ie certificates licences, church
records, etc? Unfortunately I have no experience in creating a file
or maintaing a filing system. I do use the Family Tree Maker on my
computer but my hard copy retaining system is a nightmare.
I have binders with my surnames on them. The certificates are in archival
acid-free sleeves. It makes it very easy to look at and find things.
I started out with four binders, one for each of my grandparents.
The first one to get divided into two was my father's father's book. I
made a separate book for my father, mother, and siblings. I keep one
binder per surname until it gets too large.
So with my maiden name, I have my "father's" book, his "father's" book, his
"grandfather's" book, and one for his great-grandfather. Everyone before
that is together in one last book. A child has his/her records in his/her
birth family book. Once they married it gets put into the couple's book,
along with their children's information. My father's brother and sisters
are still in their parent's book, since there is still space available..
