Wenesday is definately for society officers and librarians. In fact, it is called Librarians Day. Many of the topics include areas of society management and FHC support. If you plan to manage or assist your society in a cemetery reading project, the 2 p.m. meeting will be for you.
Wednesday also includes a comprehensive tour of the new Genealogy department at the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, conducted by Curt Witcher at 3:15 p.m., so even if you are not a society officer, you may want to arrive early enough on Wednesday to attend that tour.
For those of us in the old Northwest Territory, there are two topics that caught my interest on Thursday -- one about the migration from Ohio to Illinois and one about the effect of the canal system -- which, by the way, ran through Fort Wayne -- on population distribution.
There are many sessions on evidence, European records, computer management, methodology, etc., etc. Using the census for 20th century research is on Thursday. We relative newbies are often so focused on the 19th century that we forget about the more recent past.
There is a presentation at 5 p.m Thursday on using DNA to assist your research projects.
Thursday night's dinner is sponsored by the Allen County Public Library Foundation, with speaker Hon. William Lee. He was one of the movers and shakers of the new Allen County History Book.
Friday is THE day for me, and maybe for some of you who are not society officers. Migration patterns, Orphan Trains, Migration to Ohio, Migration west from Missouri, Pennsylvania Ancestors, Researching Voting Records, Which Genealogy Software should you get, German Migrations in 18th vs 19th century, Solving Brick Walls with Bounty Land Records, 19th Century Divorce, Non-Population Censuses, Word Processing Tricks, Old German Script, -- I could go on and on; that takes us only up to noon!! Of course, you can't take all the classes because some of them are running at the same time, but careful planning in a group could avail a group of friends with a lot to compare notes about.
Come visit beautiful downtown Fort Wayne and get to know each other.
The downtown hotels are booked. There are many more hotels available -- some of them with cooking suites -- than are listed by the FGS. If you want information about a specific hotel that is not on the list, I'll help you if I can. The newest one won't be found in any listings, I don't think. I may stop by there for information to share since it's on my way to and from downtown.
