Family name of Hint or Hindt

Hello Listers,

My mother's family continues to battle over the original spelling of
her family's name. On German Lutheran Church Archive Records,
the name was Hint. On ship's passenger lists my Gr-Grandfather
was noted as Christian (Chr.) HINDT. His Illinois naturalization
document reads HINT. He later changed his surname to HINTT.

My mother told me Christian's two brothers, Eckhard and Wilhelm,
"changed the spelling of the name to HINDT and moved from Illinois
to Iowa."

I found on a website the in the German language that DT = int. This
didn't help me much.

When I am searching the Internet for the HINT name, most of the
people were from England. My ancestors were from Mecklenburg,
villages/towns of Nustrow, Vietow, Weitendorf, Horst, Cammin,
and Sanitz with all seeming to have been christened in Basse.

On some German records the family name was noted as HINTZ.
So far, no one has shown up in our tree as Hintz.

Would someone in Germany help me with finding out if the name of
HINT or HINDT is more commonly known.

Thank you very much,
Joan Boetger/Brandon, Florida USA

Hi Joan,

Please keep in mind that before modern times, spellings were not
standardized. People wrote things the way they sounded to them. Most
places where you see your ancestor's name written, the person making the
record would have asked your ancestor what his name was, and written it
down the way it sounded to him. I have seen plenty of records where the
same person spelled the same name two differnt ways in the same document.
I'm afraid you will need to keep all possible spelling variations in mind
in looking for your family.

Hello Dr. Clemens,

I really appreciate your response to my message. Thank you!

I received two messages from you that were two minutes apart.
I couldn't see a difference in the messages. Your second message is the
message
that I am replying to.

I will tell you what I know and that is not much without doing more
research.

1. Caroline S. D. KITTENDORF was born in 1786 in Nustrow, Mecklenburg,
She married Johann Joachim LANGBEIN and they had 8 children.
Caroline died in Nustrow on 6-03-1873.
Their daughter's name was Catharina Dorothea S. LANGBEIN b. 04-08-1818
in Nustrow, Mecklenburg. Catharina married Wilhelm Friedrich GEHL.
    Mr. Gehl died in 1852.
2. Catharina then married Johann Joachim NEHLS. I have no date for their
marriage,
nor do I know if they had children together.
3. Elisabeth Caroline Christine WAACK married Friedrich Claus Wilhelm
GRIBNITZ.
I have no birth or marriage dates for Friedrich, but he died in or
before 1857.
They had a daughter named Louise Christina GRIBNITZ b. 18-09-1833 in
Pankelow,
Mecklenburg, who married Friedrich H. SIEMS on 23-10-1857 in Sanitz and
Louise
died on 14-04-1923 in Elgin, Illinois.
4. Elisabeth WAACK married Johann Christoph J. F. HINT/HINTZ (no date or
place)
Their first born child was my Gr-Grandfather on my mother's maternal
side. His name
was Johann Hint/Hindt and he was born in Weitendorf, Mecklenburg on
04-01-1839.

I'm sorry that I don't have more information. Also, I am not familiar with
the towns that
you referenced in your email, so I don't know if my family and yours lived
close to each
other or not. It's always worth a try, to see if the link can be made,
right?

I have many more family surnames that I failed to add to the bottom of my
email:
Ahrens, Grap, Dammann, Mahl, Kuhl, Thisse, Reimer, Dammann, SaB, Druse,
Meihof,
Schulz, Fuhrmann, Lewtzow, Schroeder, Rohde, Prillwitz, Hauser, Dienes,
Jungbluth,
Dammann, Mahl, Moll, Smidt, Thisse and of course, Boetger.

You put your ancestors together very nicely on your email.

Tschuess!
Joan
