I'm looking for information on my Grandmother Louisa Tappe. She came to
America around 1857 at the age of 15. I think she came from the city of
Braunschweig or some small town in the Duchy of Braunschweig. Any information

In Castle Garden (Used before Ellis Island) I found the following:
[1]TAPPE LOUISE 19 M 8 Dec 1857 HEXTOR
Hextor is listed as the last residence. I note the sex is listed as
Male. I would expect the a to be changed to e by immigration or who
ever made the entry.
I have no idea where "Hextor" is. It is probably misspelled, maybe
Hector.

I looked at the actual manifest on ancestry.com, and it does look like Hextor. Perhaps it is Höxter, which is a little bit southwest of Hildesheim.
