Family Engelbrecht

Hallo,
My name is Frederick, I am looking for any information on the name Engelbrecht.
I have an Emil David, my greatgrandfather, born 1850 in Hamburg it is said, and his father Georg.
Emil migrated to England c1860/70 and died there in 1939. I have information on Emil's marriage in 1879 and all of his family in England (Liverpool) but I am having difficulty finding any record of him in Germany. Hamburg may have simply been his port of departure for England so he could have been born anywhere in the region.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Regards

Frederick

Hamburg is neither situated in East nor in West Prussia (Ostpreussen & Westpreussen) this list is all about, and the family name Engelbrecht is not really rare in Germany. In fact, there is an Engelbrecht family in my neighborhood here in the Hanover area.

I suggest you contact authorities in the City of Hamburg to find out whether or not any documents from the middle of the 19th century have survived the fire-storm following the heavy bombing of the city by the RAF during WW II. If the information passed down in your family that Emil David Engelbrecht was born in Hamburg is correct (and why shouldn't it?), his birth would have been documented there. You should also enquire about Georg Engelbrecht and his spouse in Hamburg, since they would of course be mentioned in Emil David's birth certificate.

Most likely, you will have looked for documents in English archives as well. The Engelbrechts should be listed as immigrants, and there should be a certificate of naturalization as well, since they must have become British subjects at some point in time.

Good luck!
