Family Brandt/Brant

Hello to the list members,
I am searching for information about my great-great grandfather, Fredrick (Friedrich) E. Brandt/Brant. He was born probably 1 Dec 1827 in Prussia and he immigrated about 1852 to 1854. I would like to find out more about him, who his parents were and where he was born in Prussia. Any information at all will be helpful as I don't know where to look in German records for information, or who to have look for me. Thank you so much,

Steven Brent

Mr Fred Rump
I read your article you posted to this list regarding immigration and it was very interesting. Yes, I am sure he immigrated because he knew that living in Prussia at that time, he had no chance for a life better than his father had. Things were not good there with no chance to own property because of serfdom. In the US, he served in the US cavalry for five years Washington Territory (now WA State), married and moved to British Columbia, Canada and raised a family of six children. His first wife died in 1885 and he remarried in 1890 to a woman from Germany, Elsie Schane (sp). He was fairly well off in his old age, I think, and moved with his wife Elsie, back to the US before 1900, living in Oakland, CA. I recently found in the 1910 census that sometime before the census, he was living as a boarder at Altenheim Old Peoples Home (German), Oakland, CA.
Can someone tell me more about what this was, besides a retirement type of home. Thank you.

Steven, I hate to be a bearer of bad news but from what you now so
far it would be close to impossible to find this Friedrich Brandt
fellow. Brandt/Brand is a rather common name and Prussia was a big
country spread out all over present day Germany and beyond into
Poland, Russia and the Czech Republic.

My best suggestion is for you to check the ship lists (start with the
Germans to America volumes) and see if you can find a suitable
Fredrick. Then go to the list itself to see who else was on there.
Often people travelled with others they knew from some connection and
to similar places. You'll have to narrow this down to more then just
Prussia. That's like looking for Smith in the US.

Don't know what I wrote when but I'm glad you appreciated it.

An Altenheim is exactly how you described it - an old age home or a
nursing or rest home for seniors as we might call it today.

Fred

PS various German groups by occupation, fraternal organization or
religious connection formed such Altenheime in the past for their
members. You might look into the history of that place.

PPS you are not really in the correct list as here we talk about East
and West Prussia which were only a part of the old Prussia. The
reference you found to Prussia must be related to the time it was
quoted to then look at a map of the times.

I have another thought besides the ones from other list members. Try the IGI
lists at your Family History Center. They are on microfiche and all of the
Brandts in Europe will be mentioned with the dates of their birth and dates
of other events. You will be able to match Friedrich with the proper wife
and perhaps find the place they were from this way.
I am sure some volunteer at the center will be able to help you with this.
It is the way I discovered my Buehrts in Mecklenburg.
I would advise looking for all the Brandts and for all of the people with
his wife's name, also.

Yes, try by all means but do not expect to find the needle in a
haystack. Some people are lucky but the vast majority of people from
Europe or anywhere else are not in the IGI just yet.

A search for Friedrich Brandt at http://www.familysearch.com brings
320 Friedrich Brandt to the surface. How many others might have
existed? How many thousands? But one never knows what can be found.
We do need to luck in all corners including the LDS site.

I was looking through this site and there are some Brandts listed for your
time frame:
