Fam. Oemler en Hettstedt

Lieber Sachsen-Anhalt-Liste,

My Mother's surname was OEMLER. Her grandfather's name was Arminius Oemler
and her great grandfather's name was Augustus Gottlieb Oemler. I already
have my research and sources on both men here in the United States. I am
interested in the research on Augustus Gottlieb Oemler in Hettstedt.

Source: Dictionary of American Biography, Volume 7, Mills - Platner / edited
by Dumas Malone. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, c. 1934, 1962, p629-630.
"OEMLER, ARMINIUS (12 Sep 1827 - 8 Aug 1897), physician, agriculturist, and
promoter of the oyster industry in Georgia, was born at Savannah, Ga., son
of Augustus Gottlieb and Mary Ann (Shad) Oemler, daughter of Maj. Solomon
Sigismond Shad of Revolutionary fame. Augustus was born in Hettstedt,
Germany, son of a Lutheran pastor, a direct descendant of Nicholas Oemler,
who married Martin Luther's sister, and to whom Luther dedicated his
translation of the Bible. He came to America when he was about eighteen and
settled in Savannah, Ga. He was a pharmacist, botanist, and entomologist,
and from him Arminius inherited his scientific tastes. His mother died when
he was eight years old. He first attended school at the Chatham Academy in
Savannah, but when he was about twelve his father took him to Germany.
During 1846 to 1848 he was a student at the Dresden Technische
Bildungsanstalt. After graduating with honors he returned to Savannah... ."

After reading that item about Martin Luther's sister, I tried all the
databases I could find, but could not find any mention of Martin Luther's
sister (her name) until one week ago on the Net from the following that gave
me this:

I previously had found other articles in German & Portuguese verifying
Nikolaus Oemler mentioned with Martin Luther's name. I did learn one thing,
that when you find something & copy it, it is best to add what your Internet
Source & Search Engine was & when you found it, since some files don't
always remain on the Net.

Recently I found this on Hettstedt:
Source: News & E-Mail bei t-online.de | Politik, Sport, Unterhaltung & Ratgeber
(Google)(25 Nov 2002)
"Namensindex zur Ortschronik "Spieler, Otto: 950 Jahre Hettstedt (1995 -
1996) has Luther, 1870 & Oemler, 1994 ."
I figure that this is an index of Surnames showing the year up to when the
family surnames were known to have survived in Hettstedt.

Presently there are about six families that I have found addresses for in
the Hettstedt area. I have written a few of the Oemler addresses found on
the Net last year and only have gotten one answer from a girl from Hettstedt
attending school in Frankfurt, and she did not know anything. She wrote once
saying that she would ask her family, and as of yet, even after I have
followed up with more letters, I have not received any answer. I can see
they are cautious in their dealings, since their time of living under
Russian rule naturally has made them more cautious after having lived under
Hitler's rule. We are so used to our freedom here in our country, and our
freedom of speech, that becoming accustomed to their way is something we
must be patient with in long distance communication. One is fortunate if you
have a contact there in the country to help you.

As you can see, this does not include the years I need. Yet, I will go over
the first one again.

I am not sure which Church book he would be found in, since I don't know if
the Hettstedt church book exists for his birth year & further back.

I know that the LDS church stopped filming there when the Iron Curtain
prevented any further time there. I know that they do have full time people
who go about the world on assignment just for filming and the church first
gets the permission of the government and then the Churchs or village or
cities they are to visit for filming. Two days ago I sent some questions to
the FHL in Salt Lake City questioning if they are going to start filming
there again. I do know that they have withdrawn their missionairies from the
areas that has had big terrorist activities or wars in the past, since I am
a member of their church. I also work in our Family History Center & am
presently extracting information from a Kirchenbuch from Switzerland on
Augustus Gottlieb Oemler's wife's family.

I need the family data on Augustus Gottlieb Oemler, including dates born for
himself, & any other siblings he had, plus his parent's names & other data
on them, plus places birth, marriage, & death. I would like to get all
Oemler info all the way back to Nikolaus Oemler, and that is a wish? Heh,
heh.

I think Augustus Gottlieb Oemler was born about 1771? I did find him in the
1790 Chatham county, Georgia Federal census, & those censuses thereafter. He
died Dec 1852 in Savannah, Chatham, Georgia. I do have a silver very heavy
thick spoon that was his with the initials "N.M.O." on it that might have
been his father's? The rest of the silverware I have had his initials, and
his son's initials.

Please, I would like to hear from any Oemler relatives who can help or
anyone else who has information or who can help me. If you do have some
Oemler information, Please include your Source information where it has been
obtained from, with title, author, name of church book, pg. nbr, or name of
person, bible, city representative, & address, etc.

I have been in contact with a friend who lives in Arizona and has been
traveling back and forth to Germany. As of yet, I have not heard from my
friend, Michel Haase, about Hettstedt or whether Kirchenbuch or
"Ortssippenbucher" exists.

Please advise.

Having gone through the Cache of your list, I have learned much. I thank you
for your patience and the excellent information there.

Danke,
Elizabeth Thomas

"Conference focuses on German heritage"

"By Cathy Willoughby
Staff Writer"
cwilloughby@advertiser-tribune.com

"Seeking information on the search to locate their German forefathers, more
than 90 people from Ohio and Michigan came to Heidelberg College Saturday.
They were attending the first Ohio German Heritage Conference, sponsored by
the college and the Seneca County Genealogical Society."

"The keynote speaker was Dan Heinmeier of Arlington, Va., whose sessions
covered the immigration of Germans to the United States, their impact on the
country and Ohio in particular, and how their descendants can find our more
about their lives. ..."

"To aid researchers in their hunt for information in the home country,
Heinemeier led a session in the use of "Ortssippenbucher" in German
genealogical research. ..."

"Families are generally listed alphabetically, with the head of household
first, his occupation, then others with a relationship to him. Showing an
example, Heinemeier said if a death date was not shown, it often meant that
person had emigrated.

Also in the village books are historical accounts of significance, such as
wars or times of pestilence. If a book is not available for the town of
ancestry, valuable information can still be gained from a book in a nearby
town. Copies of each book should be available from the Library of Congress
website at LOC.gov."

I am including the url for Library of Congress address:

http://catalog.loc.gov/

Having worked in a library as a cataloger, I used the New database they have
for searching since it will show the whole record. Click on Basic Search..
Type in word "Ortssippenbucher" and click on Keyword. All the files with
that word can be viewed.

You can check the items needed & go on from there with your research. Since
I have used their database for several years as a reference & an update on
Subject Headings, I have not used it as a resource for library loan. I think
that you had best go to your local library, & see if you can get the book
you need on loan. I do know that they usually keep only one book of each
title you view on their database. You might have to go to the Library of
Congress to do your research, but I think it is worth the trip if you find a
book there on their database there that will help you. If you get a book on
loan, they will only let you view it in their library, but since the book
may be an old one, I think they might have another method by which you can
view it. You might want to ask if the have a microfilm of it, or if you can
get a Xerox copy of it.

The word "Ortssippenbucher" brings up 313 records.
While viewing the records, it would be best to place the mode in Full Record
so you can see the Subjects, & click on Next to view the following Record.

A word of caution to any who try to use their database. During peak times
when other libraries are open, it is hard to get into the database because
of the time a librarian may be using it. Anyone can access it, but it is
best I have found to do it late at night, or very very early in the morning,
before the East coast starts working. Remember the Library of Congress is in
Washington, D.C. and one must figure on time difference from where you are
situated. If you can get in during a peak time, their session of allowing
you to research is timed. You might be booted off if you take too long, and
you will have to wait your turn if you need to view records during the day
time.

Good luck to anyone who finds something there that will help them.

Hallo Listenleser,

von einem meiner Vorfahren ist kein Gebutsdatum, dafr aber das Todesdatum
mit Altersangabe bekannt. Rechnerisch ergibt sich das Geburtsjahr 1669. In
