Hello, i don't know if I am in the correct web site, but am looking for Essen and my G Grandfather, Charles Griese. Any help would be very appreicated. Thank you, Cindy
Hello Cindy,
There is a city in Westphalia (Westfalen) called Essen. If this is the
correct one, of course, I can't say.
For that, you can try www.mapquest. com.
If your great-grandfather was born in Essen, Westfalen, please give the list
as much information as you have, such as date of birth, siblings, name of
parents, spouse, possible immigration etc. That way we are able to help
better.
Best wishes with your research,
Petra Hoelzemann-Telege
Hello Cindy,

the river of called Ruhr.

Essen is a large metropolitan city rebuilt after the war. It was totally
destroyed during the war and when my mother and I were allowed to return
after our evacuation, we did not recognize anything. The streets were flat,
no houses, just ruins and I remember that for a long time we had to live
below the street in cellars or makeship kind of a shelter.
The city was destroyed due to Krupp having his factory there, producing
ammunition etc. for the war.
It is not only close to the Ruhr, but also the Baldeney Lake, which is a
very beautiful Lake, close to which is Villa Huegel, the former home of
Alfred Krupp.

choice, living in Canada)
Hello Cindy and list,
The reason that I questioned which Essen is the right one is that there is
also a place called Essen/Diepholz in Niedersachsen.
A nice weekend to all,

There's
Essen/Ruhr, Bad Essen and Essen/Oldenburg.
The first one is the largest (almost 600.000 inhabitants)
However none of them is in Westfalen: Essen/Ruhr is in the former
"Rheinprovinz" hence in the "Nordrhein"-part of Nordrhein-Westfalen.
