Just in case anybody wants further links to Barlage. My wife's
grandmother was Anna Josefine Bernardine Barlage *19 Apr. 1879
(Essen), +6 Jun 1961 (Westeremsteck)
She married Johann Behne and her parents were Gerhard Heinrich Barlage
and Anna Bernadina Josefina Markus. There are many Barlages as the
family was very fruitful as far as progeny is concerned but the Essen
group comes from a section of Essen called Nadorst where the old
Barlage farm was located. Today it is on the Nadorster Weg.
The 2011 Essen Jahrbuch just had an article about Father Heinrich
Johannes Barlage who just celebrated his 50th anniversary in the
priesthood in Essen but has been stationed in various corners of the
world. He was one of 7 children of Heinrich Barlage and Anna Maria
Johanna Markus. One needs to have all the given names to keep these
folks straight.
When my wife was 14 her mother died suddenly of a stroke and she was
handed the task of taking care of the household. Other then a nun
telling her to just put whatever vegetables she can find into a pot to
make soup, she didn't know a whole lot about anything. This meant
instantly learning how to milk the goats and other such tasks. She
asked for her Barlage grandmother to come live with her but that was
denied by her aunt who said she had to help out on her farm. Needless
to say this remained at the top of my wife's memory banks as she
struggled to do what her mother had done on an instant basis. She
would run to the Menslage neighbor's house and ask all the questions
she needed answers for. It must have been hell for her at 14 years of
age.
