Hello everyone,
I am new to your list and am researching my gg-grandfather, Wilhelm Engeln,
born April 3, 1840. The family is Catholic. Letters written between family
in the early 1900's state that Wilhelm was born in Hanover and that when he
decided to go into the dyer trade (we have heard the family were professional
people) they had no more communication with him. He immigrated in 1866
aboard the "Hansa" from Bremen to Southhampton to New York, making his way to
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, US. The passenger list also gives the village of Leer,
Germany.
Thank you for any help and suggestions,
Sally in Wisconsin
Hello,
You should write to Leer, Stadtarchiv. You must not call Leer a village. It had
1016 inhabitants in 1825. It got the rights and status of a city in 1823. Its
history goes back to the time around the year 800, when the missionary Liudger
founded the church, probably the first one in Ostfriesland/Eastern Frisia.
Mr. Vogelsang, the city archivist, will do his berst to help you.
Sincerely yours
