Engelkenjohann, Leveren (Minden)

Hello,

From the Hollandgaenger below I found out that very probably relatives have emigrated from Levern to the USA (the name has changed to Engelkenjohn), but I haven't been able to establish a connection. I hope one of you can.

Johan Henrich ENGELKENJOHANN (Johann Hindrick Engliohann), landgebruiker.

Married to Charlotte Elizabeth WOLKENMEIJER (Charlotte Louise), landgebruikersvrouw.

From this marriage:

1. Christiaan Friederks ENGELKENJOHANN (Engelkenjohann, Engeliohann; Kristiaan, Kristejan; Friderks, Fredriks), boerenknecht, born on 31-07-1787 in Leveren, vorstendom Minden, departement van de Lippe (D.), died on 17-07-1851 at 16:00 in Meeden, Beneden Veensloot at the age of 63, He lived at Meeden. married (1) to Maria Charlotte LEVERMANN, died voor 1813.

Dear Jan!

"Engelken" is probably only a "second name" but not the real surname. In
Levern at that time the writing of the surnames still changed from year to
year - and there has been the surname "Engelage" or "bei der Engelage(n)"
which means the farm at the place "Engelage".
This surname occurs in my family (in Hille) - and some members were called
in "plattdeutsch" Engelke(n).
Perhaps this is the same with your "Engelkenjohann" - and "Engelkenjohann"
was the son named "Johann" of a family called "Engelken" (which is also a
form of the prename "Engel")?

Good luck!

Kris

Dear Kris,

I also found people with this Name in Wehdem.

Would you perhaps know where the churchbooks of Levern can be studied?

With kind regards,

Jan
