Engel Maria Clara LANGE,b.24 Feb 1826-Hannover

Am searching for parents and birthplace in Hannover
of: Engel Maria Clara LANGE, born 24 feb 1826.
She emigrated to the United States about 1850 and
lived in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, USA where she
married 17 Mar 1851 to Friedrich LUCKE(R).
She had 8 children:
1-Engel Louisa , b. 2 Jan 1852
2-Johann Friedrich Wilhelm, b. 18 Jan 1854
3-Anna Marie, b. 5 Aug 1855
They then moved to Franklin Co., Indiana and had:
4-Wilhelm, b. 12 Jun 1857
5-Margaret or Minnie, b. 19 Apr 1859
6-Frederick E., b. 17 May 1861
7-Mary, b. 27 Jun 1863
8-Emma, b. abt. 1865
Many church, emigration, census records have been
searched to find parents of Engel in Cincinnati, but
nowhere does it mention the village in Hannover where
she was born. Would appreciate any help. Renee Harris

Hi Renee,
       Some questions here:

Did Engel and Friedrich come to the U.S. at the same time? On the
same ship?

What information do you have on Friedrich?

The problem is, as you know, there are many Langes and a number of
Lucke (and variations). There are some emigration archives from Osnabrück
that have Engel Lange and Friedrich Lücke with similiar codes (which I can
explain later) that might indicate they were on the same boat and got
married after that. However, we can't jump to hasty conclusions since there
are a lot of Engel Langes. And too often people did not commonly use the
first name listed as a given name - sometimes it's the name nearest the
surname.

I have tried to find the household in the 1880 census, but I don't find
it. I may have missed it. I'd like to see their answers for birthplace.

I had people coming through Cincinnati as well. There are some handy
books in public libraries with a good genealogy secton. There is one which
lists the marriages in that era in Hamilton County. Have you seen the
marriage record? Another book shows the applications for citizenship index.
It would give the date and port for Friedrich's arrival in the USA. Women
didn't get to be citizens in those days :>(

If you are near a public library with the Germans to America series,
you might find them on the same ship. From that, we may be able to determine
that they traveled together and married in Ohio. If they traveled together,
then those Osanbrück emigration records might be about them and that would
give further information, like birthplace and parents' names.

That's all for now!
Barbara

I'm afraid yours is a story (and regrettable lament) as old as the hills Renee. Families immigrate, and soon the ancestral trail is forgotten in the name of new priorities and demands. Hard to believe with such detailed information you cannot connect Engel's parents, but we have all seen this sort of thing before! So take comfort in knowing you're not alone. I'm curious, did you methodically piece all these dates together, or are they from perhaps a family bible or transcription? The names Lange and Lucke don't lend themselves all that well to 'uncommon denominators' as they are well known German surnames. Not as commonplace as Meier or Schmidt or Shulz, but not all that far behind either. Without more background details, you're surrounded by a sea of rather obscure possibilities on the names alone.

Once church, emigration and census records have been searched (hopefully as thoroughly as possible), you are still left with additional record types you can pursue. Vital stat records (particularly deaths + births), city directories, voter registers, naturalization, probate and will proceedings from court archives, land deeds and transfers from the county clerk or recorder's office, obituaries and funeral notices from local newspapers, cemetery ledgers, local area histories (for biographical sketches) - the possibilities go on and on, any one of which might land you a winning ticket. As these get checked off one by one, so too do your chances for easy fixes. Have you thought of checking with a genealogist in the Cincinnati (or Franklin Co) area to inquire more of specific local area resources and archive holdings?

Outside of those kinds of documents and resources, you may have to attempt to piece together the collateral lines (the descendent lines of Engel and Friedrich's various children), in hopes of locating distant cousins who may have additional knowledge of your family's Germanic antecedence. Of course it never hurts to subscribe to localized and bilingual lists like this one for a gamut of reasons, or hammer away on open ended venues like search engines (a la Google, etc.) which may render that 'pearl in the rough', but more often than not that will be a matter of luck without more specific background details.

You just keep working at it, and never give up. A breakthrough awaits, if you're up to the task. No one said it would be easy though. In that regard, welcome to the H-L club! All I can say is you're in empathetic company.

Dear Renee,

Might you have surnames of persons associated with your Lange/Lucker family? Perhaps sponsers names present at christening of children and/or marriage of Engel Maria and Friedrich? Perhaps there were families in Hamilton and later Indiana that your subject knew from the old country..or may have been related to.

Is Engel a given name? Or is Engel a surname prior to Lange? Sort like Maria Engel geb. Lange?

Probobly stupid question. Just unfamiliar with Engel as feminine given name.

Engel is in this case a given name, today Angela (short Angie)

Hello Renee,

in IGI you find your family in Batch number F792993, and her name is Clara Louise LANG, born 24th Feb 1826. But no indication where she was born either...

May be it helps a little bit.
