Elias Sudinck

He may have changed his name. Are there Sudings associated with shipping or a shipwreck or who migrated?

I have no informations about emigrants in the 1700s from the Oldenburg province.
But I know, that a lot of people going to Netherland as season workers, some of them as fishermen.
Therefore it could be, that the shipwreck was a fishing boat from Netherland and Elias Suding was a fishermen.

Werner et al.

Could his first name have been EILERT?

Fr. David

The surname Suding seems to be situated in the region of Southern Oldenburg or Muensterland, but Elert is an frisian name.

Elias was also an unsual name at this time in that region..

Thank you everybody for your comments and suggestions so far.
Do you have any record of a Benjamin Sudinck/Suding in the 1700s?

Hello Allison,

I've followed the discussion on the emigrants mailing list and found

   Does this help?

Hello!

I am trying to details of one of my ancestors who has German connections. I have very little background information about him, is there any chance I can locate him, or do I have really too little information to search on? What I have is:

Name: Herman(n) BLOCK
Birth: About 1847 Oldenburg Germany
Occupation: Mariner
He first appears in the British records in the 1871 census on board ship. In the 1881 census, against his place of birth he is also noted as a British Subject. I don’t know if this means he was nationalised in the meantime or had always been a British subject and just happened to be born in Germany to British parents so was a British citizen by parentage, (although his name sounds as if he could have German roots)

I am really interested to hear if it is possible to find out more, so Iook forward to your reply.

Regards

Corinne LLETI

Thank you Holger.
I am aware of that document. It has helped me a lot.

I am coming to the conclusion that there may have been some confusion in the family story over the decades and that Captain Benjamin Sudinck/Suding (whom I do have records for) may be the same person as Captain Elias Sudinck/Suding (who I did not have records for). Perhaps Elias chanegd his name to Benjamin.

Thanks to everyone who has made suggestions.
