3/7/99 My question concerns the meaning of my family surname: Ebmeyer
Do the separate parts of the name have a specific meaning in the
Geramn language? Eb means ??? meyer means ??? In some cases I have
seen it spelled Ebb
Ebmeyer / Ebermayer = Bavarian
Ebmeyer / Eberhart = became Eberlin / Eberli; a saxon prefix where Eberhart
means bold and strong like a boar
Ebmeyer = boar farmer Bavaria, Tyrol, or, Austrian
Ebb = Low german Frisian / also Ukena Uken a Frisian chief
Hohen meier = became Homeyer 1770s
Regions are Frisian, old Lippe, Weser River, Oldenburg, and Berlin
See Husum/ Hanover, Nienburg Weser, Bremen, etc
Homeyer's were Lutheran
Caroline Hohmeier/ Homeyer came to Iowa in 1925 on the ship Amerika Bremen
to NYC Ellis
Caroline's father owned a mill in Lippe her maiden name was Mller
Several Homeyers sided against the Kyser, some went with the Kyser, and
Caroline had just lost both her husband and Son in WW1
So she went to the US with her jewish farm manager and as many Homeyer
children as she could.
Caroline's son was killed when my father was @ 2 or 3 years old / ww1 German
Navy 1915 - 1919
I hope you find these items helpful
Some people do assume that Ho meyer means high mower or farm on the hill
There was at one time a town named Homeyer in Germany
And there are 2 monuments to the Homeyer men and women in Hanover Cemetary
Good Luck
