Hi all,
My Phls ancestors also used the surname Plitz. They did this
from the later 1600s through at least the 1850s. During this period
they did not live continuously in the same village or even the same
parish-- they lived in Schossin (Parum parish), Gadebusch (its own parish),
Schoenberg (its own parish), and Herrnburg (its own parish). While they
may have owned or leased farm property at points during this time, they
are known to have been free farm laborers in Schossin, and neither owned
nor leased anything during their residence there in the later 1600s.
Consequently, it does not appear that standard farm name explanation
applies. They did have a very small piece of land in Holstein prior to
moving
to Schossin (the ancestor at that time was a cottager), but it was sold
during the 1650s, and the new owner adopted neither the Plitz nor the
Phls surname, so there wasn't a farm name attached to that property.
Does anyone have an explanation for their dual surnames?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Paul Zebe
