Does anyone know what area the name Speckman would be common?

My grandfather worked with a family named Speckman that I believe may have come from the same area as he, perhaps sponsored him. Any information would be helpful. This is the Americanized spelling, not sure how it would be spelled in German. Thanks. DB

Hello,
Have you done a search on the LDS site www.familysearch.org?
If you search for the name Speckman alone with no dates, etc, you will find
MANY with that name in Germany! A first name would narrow it down a bit.

Darlene,
What city are you referring to? If that city has a city directory (predecesor to the phone book) it can be very helpful. Look up your ancestor and see where he was working at a given time, or what his occupation was. Then look up Speckman and see what his (or "their") occupations or place of work were. It has proven successful for me several times.

For example, I found Conrad Schaeffer and William Hammer both working at the Eagle Stove Co. in St. Louis in the same edition of the St. Louis city directory. These are the two husbands of my gggrandmother. It gives me some much needed information as to how Elizabeth met Will Hammer. The men worked together and because they almost certainly walked to work, they lived close to each other. Apparently when Conrad died, this man who she already knew and trusted, became her 2nd husband and father to her 4 children.

Good luck!

Hello Darlene,

Gina s advice is good.
We do have a place (hamlet) Specken at five miles from the
town Diepholz.
Specken is part of the village Cornau and of the evangelical lutheran
church
parish Mariendrebber.
Derived from the village name Specken there are a lot of Speckmann
families in the region. But probably it is not the only name source.

Sincerely yours
