Documents in Staatsarchiv Stade

Dear List:

I have an ancestor named Johann Friedrich Butt, born March 27, 1827 in the kingdom of Hannover (village unknown). He died in Minnesota on January 21, 1917. Through previous posts to this list and responses from the always helpful members, I might have narrowed down the area where he lived in Germany. I found several entries on aidaonline.niedersachsen.de for a man with the exact same name in the Amtsgericht Buxtehude and and Amtsgericht Geestemuende.

This is my question: Since the only definite information I have is Johann's date of birth, does anyone know what types of documents would be held at the Staatsarchiv Stade which might contain the date of birth for that Johann Friedrich Butt found on aidaonline? I'm not sure which type of legal document would require someone's date of birth, but would like to narrow it down if possible. There are several, several documents at the Staatsarchiv in which he is listed, and if his birthdate is listed on specific types of documents held there, I would like to ask for someone to research only those documents to determine if the gentleman in the documents is indeed my ancestor.

Along that same thought, does anyone know of a reputable researcher near the Staatsarchiv Stade?

As usual, many thanks for anyone's help!

Dear Robin,

From my experience researching in the area of Stade I would recommend that

you look for church records in 1827 because there were very few civil
records at the time. The LDS have many church records from the archives of
Stade on microfilm. Unfortunately, it seems they do not have records from
Buxtehude but they do have records for the Evangelical Reformed church in
Geestemunde. I think that is where I would start. The key to finding a
person in church records, of course, is knowing their village. You, at least
have a clue so I would follow that first.
