I did the Family Finder dna test. Matched my second cousin one time removed.
The price is $99.
There are other kinds of DNA tests at this web site.
There are also other webs sites to do DNA testing.

23and me is also very useful... it also used by a group of families descended from Prussian Mennonites who are trying to build a database of relations. 23andme does both Pateral and Maternal line for 99USD.

If you speak German, it might be useful to watch the following link - you have to click on the date Oct. 14th and on “Gentests für jedermann”:

23and me was one of the companies they tested – with a contract far too long and complicated to read, so the “saliva-donator” just clicked to accept the conditons – which, of course, he should not have done! He was asked a lot of questions which had nothing to do with his ancestors: they wanted information on previous diseases, on “periods of depression” etc., even asked for the brand of his shampoo!!! When the testperson got the results, it turned out the company had done a complete analysis of his health – 237 health risks and genetic dispositions! - and the contract says that he had agreed to allow the company to sell this data to “a third party” in order to launch new products onto the market…

The founder of 23andme, Anne Wojcicki, is wife of the co-founder of “google”, Sergey Brin … need I say more?

May-be that Germans are more sensitive with their data – especially when they fall into the hands of the wrong people – I would not like my insurance company to augment my fees because they bought my DNA-test …

Birgit

I have quite a different view on such things. I like 23andme precisely because they do more than simple Family Tree chasing. As for where the data goes, HIPAA protects such things in the US when it comes to personal identifiable data. All DNA companies fall under that law. So one company is not more likely to send identifiable data out than another.

All the Genealogy DNA experts I have dealt with in the US (which is only a handful) have highly recommended 23andme over the competition and several of those are Doctors.

As for Fear Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) about privacy you note... I tend to believe no one has privacy anyway, no matter what action they attempt to take to protect it. Most technologists tend to support that opinion. Anything on a computer is available for determined 'evil doers' to mine/ steal. Governments have a weak and ineffectual history in protecting us from data misuse and theft. Instead governments are rather better at making sure they, not we, benefit from the data they 'protect'. Without a focus on German history, we can see what the NSA does with totally privileged and protected governmental and personal communications.

So you are right. Nothing about sharing genealogy information (of any type) is harmless no matter who does it. Evil people will take advantage of data for their own ends. Sadly, nothing can be done to keep your information from them except by being totally silent and incommunicado. To think otherwise is unrealistic.
