Hi List,
Here is a subject I am wondering about and do not remember it being
discussed on the list. "DNA"
I am wondering in a case like mine if anyone has any thoughts. I have
contacted several Marhenke's in Germany from various areas and I do not
have a clue if we connect or not. Is there an affordable DNA test that
would confirm or deny a family connection? If so can you guide me to
this service? As I understand it has to be a Male contribution to prove
anything.

Actually, Ancestry.com has just partnered with Relative Genetics. I believe
the charge is about $150 ... Don't get anything less than 43 markers. A
match or close match will tell you if you have a 'common ancestor' in about
8 generations. You can actually start a surname study group. The testing
is now a Q-tip which is rubbed on the inside of the cheek. The surname
study requires a 'living male biological descendant'. The Y-chromosomes are
passed 'almost unaltered' from father to son. The women's DNA follows the
maternal line ... So mother, maternal grandmother, maternal
great-grandmother (so no following surnames). The DNA tests I paid for
through Relative Genetics takes about 4 weeks for the lab to process once
they receive it back .. And they provide results back to the person. If you
go to http://www.ancestry.com and click on DNA it will guide you through the
process.
Sorenson Molecular Genealogical foundation http://www.smgf.org will do the
free testing. You must have a minimum of 4 generations. Unfortunately,
they do not return any results AND it takes several months for the
information to be entered into the database.
The WELLS Surname DNA Study has been very successful with over 300+
participants. You can see their results and see how the match on
http://www.wells.org .. My personal WELLS line has about 20 researchers that
we know we have a 'common ancestor' but the ancestor can be several
generations back, so we have not all connected to each other. Some people
have had some rather upsetting results since it was determined that they are
actually descended from a non-WELLS ... Probably adoption ... Out-of-wedlock
births ... Or the milkman. With the Orphan trains and entire families with
except of some children dying of disease, it was not uncommon that the
children would be 'taken in' by neighbors ... And out of gratitude, the
child took their foster parents surname.
There is another lab I know about it is http://www.ftdna.com Family Tree
DNA.
Several HILLMER researchers did partake in the free Sorenson DNA testing and
we found two distinct lines with common ancestors ... But they are so
different that they would have never been related. It has been exciting.
