DNA tests in Germany

Can Germans in Germany do DNA tests from public companies, or is it against German law ?
allen

Hi Allen,

I am German and I used foreign companies to make the tests. I am not sure
if here in Germany is a company which makes them, I think the law here in
Germany is stronger because of the tests (privacy policy), if it is
forbidden I am not really sure.

But most of the German people are not interested in doing DNA-Tests, because
most of them (I think) are afraid what kind of ethic group they will find in
there lineages :wink: .

Das ist ja aber lustig! :wink:

Hallo Mark,

dann erklär Du doch bitte Allen mit Deinen Worten, etwas zu den DNA-Testen
hier in Deutschland. Also ich habe schon dumme Kommentare geerntet, wenn ich
über meine genetischen Vorfahren gesprochen habe. Ist halt so. Ich kann es
leider nicht ändern.

Viele Grüße
Angela

Hi Allen

I think the point is that culturally there is resistance to DNA testing in Germany, based upon Angela's experience(s). I can say for certain, that you ought to be able to take the tests as provided by US firms, although getting the tests and receiving the test results may provide a challenge. I personally would recommend you examine the websites of several of the more widely used providers to see if they will send/ take materials to Germany. Here are few worth checking...

  * ancestry.com / ancestry.de
  * 23andme.com

I personally have used 23andme for my DNA tests (If you want to see my published results they are available here: http://is.gd/uREMM4 ). I like them because of the affiliation they have with a group tracking and accumulating West Prussian Mennonite DNA. If you want excellent insights into this domain I HIGHLY recommend CeCe Moore (see: http://www.yourgeneticgenealogist.com/). But feel free to take a look see on the sites.

Have fun! Viel spass beim forschen!

Of course, DNA tests are allowed in Germany. It is not because of a "lineage problem" some people might be afraid of (what should such fears be based on anyhow?). The results of those DNA tests are not precise enough, however they cost a lot of money. I know someone who found out through an DNA test that his ancestors way back came from what is now Finland - or the vicinety [!]. So what? Is that of any help, as long as the names of those in the generations in between are unknown?

Hallo Rolf-Peter

I will point you to two articles on my site where DNA data did help... but you are correct in stating you need additional information to make it 'all work'.

As for the costs... here in the US the costs are right around $99.
