Dirck Dietr Gerdes family birthplace

I need help. How do I go about finding the town of this family?

ship manifest information.
  embark: Bremen, Germany
      debark: New York
      ship's name: Jenny
  Arrival Date: 16 Apr 1869
Dirck Dietr Gerdes 50 farmer Prussia Ill
      Gretje 53
      Gebke 25
      Ventje 22
      Talke 17
      Dirk 0/11m

I have a lot of information about Gebke and baby Dirk, but no information about what town they were born. I have one 1870 USA census that lists the parents as from Hanover, but no children are listed. Obituary information only lists Germany as their birthplace.

Have you looked at the church records where the
children were baptized here in the USA?

Try to find any and all records for Baptisms,
Confirmatios, Marriage records and death records.
Church records are sometimes the only place you will
get the name of the towns our German immigrants came
from. Some church record books have a list of members
at the back of the books, with the names of the towns
in which they were born.

The names Dirck, Gretje, Ventja as well as the rest
gives me an idea that they came from northern Germany,
maybe Schelswig-Holstein area. Just a thought.

Good luck,
Carol

Hi,

With those names with the "je" on the end, I would guess they come
from Ostfriesland in Hannover or thereabouts. West and northwest. At any
rate, do a search for Gerdes on this page and you will find 317 Gerdes
names:

Click on the little arrows on the right and see what you find. You
will find whole towns with a lot of those names.

They weren't on the emigration records. But those emigration records
are far from complete.

     I wish you great success!
