Dieck, Dieckhaus, Dyckhus, Dickhaus

I found the notes on the Dieck name very interesting, especially with the
mention of Holdorf. I have Dickhaus/ Dyckhus family in my line.

Especially Caroline Bernadine Dyckhus, died in August 1875 I believe in
Damme area. She was married to Herman/Heinich Moormann.
She died a few months after the birth of Franz H. Moormann, born in May
1875. Herman/ Heinrich remarried to Josaphine Schilstein I believe. I
also believe they were connected to St. Viktor Church in Damme.

So I supposed I would be correct in my belief that Dieckhaus/Dickhaus,
Dyckhus would also have something to do with the dikes up north in Germany
or in Holland?

If you can't read German, it sure helps to have a site like this that helps
when you are trying to research in a country that you can't understand
everything you read in print. I have been able over the years to pick up a
few terms and words to get the drift of maybe what I am reading, but it sure
slows the research a great deal.

Thanks for any help any one may be able to suggest with the above data.

Jan, you have to remember that these names are very old but somewhere
along the line there was a place called by some version of Diekhaus
(actually there were many). The people who lived there began to be
called by their homestead as did their progeny after they moved
elsewhere. Typically other people came to live in the Diekhaus farm
and they too adopted the name. They may not have been connected
genetically at all but that's how names spread over the centuries.
Along the line they changed to many different versions of the original
intent. Your ancestors may have never seen a dike or even thought
about the meaning of their name. It all goes back, way back often to
before things were written down.
